a survey among 50 students showed that 30 students played football, 9 students played cricket, x students played neither cricket nor football, 3x students played cricket only.
find the amount that played cricket only.
A survey among 50 students showed that 30 students played football?
Cricket only = 3x
So Cricket and Football = 9-3x
So football only = 30 -(9-3x) =21 +3x
Total =50
21+3x + 9 - 3x +3x +x =50
4x = 20
x=5
Cricket only =15
Reply:Intersection = 9 - 3x
[30 - (9 - 3x)] + (9 - 3x) + x + 3x = 50
30 - 9 + 3x + 9 - 3x + x + 3x = 50
30 + 4x = 50
4x = 20
x = 5
Hence 3(5) = 15 students played cricket only.
Reply:If 9 played cricket how can 15 play cricket only ?. I dont think there is enough info to get an excact number you are gonna end up with a less than or more than issue.
Actually I think the problem is written wrong .
If 20 didnt play football. and of those 20 they either did or didnt play cricket. so did is 3x didnt is 1 x so
3x plus 1 x = 20
which also gives me X=5
which is impossible because you end up with more students playing cricket only than the number given as playing cricket.
